Goals

 

The aim of the Byzantine Studies Research Center is to encourage the development of Byzantine studies in Turkey and around the world, to become a leading academic platform for research projects and to strengthen international academic collaboration. The Center supports academic research on different aspects of Byzantine civilization in numerous disciplines ranging from history to archaeology and art history as well as from literature to philosophy within the framework of Byzantine and medieval Eastern Mediterranean history. In line with the goals stated above, the Center aims:

  • To support and foster the development of education in the fields of Byzantine history, art history, architectural history, and archaeology at Boğaziçi University and in Turkey; to contribute to the education of students specializing in the above-mentioned fields at both MA and PhD levels; to encourage language education in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Medieval Greek; to organize “tools of the trade” seminars on Byzantine paleography, numismatics, codicology, and other auxiliary sciences.
  • To initiate and support various projects involving research, documentation, conservation and preservation in collaboration with national and international universities, NGOs and relevant institutions; to promote and sustain such projects through workshops, talk series, seminars, and publications.
  • To encourage academic exchange and collaboration among post-doctoral researchers and faculty members in Turkey and in other countries; to connect Byzantinists by organizing national and international conferences.
  • To support and foster studies and projects that document and preserve the Byzantine cultural heritage.
  • To inform the public in Turkey about Byzantine civilization via public-oriented activities such as exhibitions, popular talk series, and efficient use of online media tools.
  • To promote studies that examine Byzantine culture in a common context with neighboring cultures such as medieval Balkan, Islamic and Turkish civilizations; to support interdisciplinary approaches.
