Lecture: Dr. Christos Malatras, “The Earthly Order: Social Stratification in Late Byzantium”
Thursday, December 10, 2015 - 13:45
Christos Malatras, who had a position as a post-doctoral researcher in the Athenian Academy between the years 2014-2015, is currently pursuing his research in Boğaziçi University as a TÜBİTAK Research Fellow. In his talk on December 10, 2016, Malatras explored the ways in which hierarchy was established and functioned in Byzantine society. According to Malatras, while the social order in Late Byzantium was founded on inequalities originating from different factors such as political power, economic differences and nobility, they were rendered bearable for the society through charity mechanisms.
