Hybrid Lecture by Alexander Christie Miller in London, United Kingdom: Adrift in Time: Istanbul’s Theodosian Land Walls in the Urban Fabric of the Modern Megacity
7 Nov 25
The fifth-century land walls of Constantinople are among the most dramatic and impressive surviving monuments of the East Roman/Byzantine Empire. Unlike the Basilica of Hagia Sophia and other Byzantine churches, which found new life as mosques or museums, the walls have undergone centuries of neglect. The lecture will examine the rich cultural and urban context in which the city walls exist today, their relationship with modern Turkish society, and their future in a fast-growing megacity.
The lecture will be held in-person and via Zoom
Location: Society of Antiquaries of London, Burlington House, W1J 0BE, London
