Prize Announcement: The Effie G. H. Pedaliu Prize in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies

Call For Submissions: 1 September 2026- 9 December 2026

The editors of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (BMGS) have established this prize in memory of Effie G. H. Pedaliu, a transnational historian of the Cold War and Mediterranean Europe, with particular expertise on Italy and Greece, who held positions at LSE, King's College London, and the University of the West of England, and later a Visiting Fellowship at LSE IDEAS. Effie was widely admired for her generous mentorship of early-career scholars, especially women, and this prize honours that legacy by supporting the next generation of researchers in the field.

The winner's prize will consist of:

• £1,000 cash award
• £500 worth of CUP books
• Pairing with two BMGS board mentors to support the article's development toward publication
• An invitation to present the winning work at an annual mini-roundtable held alongside the BMGS board meeting

Editorial statement of BMGS

Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is an internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal and one of the leading publications in its field. Issued twice a year in spring and autumn, the journal provides a major forum for innovative scholarship on the Greek world and neighboring cultures from late antiquity to the present, expressly including the early modern and Ottoman periods as well as the later reception of Byzantium. Its scope encompasses history, literature, philology, art history, archaeology, and anthropology.
